“What not to wear.”
“What not to do.”
30 things to do before you’re 30.
Primum Non Nocere – first, do no harm.
In a culture of abundance and facility, Stop is the new Start.
The nonifesto is the new C21st manifesto.
While everyone else is trumpeting and chasing Achievements, Friends, Followers, Goals, Stuff, Status, Badges, Memberships, Tribes, Communities, More Stuff, Experiences, UX (User Experience), Shop-therapy, Tag-therapy, Like-Therapy…
It’s all just consumerism in different forms. It’s all just a desperate attempt to find comfort through meaning, to find meaning through action and reaction.
You do not need to leave your room. Remain sitting at your table and listen. Do not even listen, simply wait. Do not even wait, be quiet still and solitary. The world will freely offer itself to you to be unmasked, it has no choice, it will roll in ecstasy at your feet. (Franz Kafka, Aphorisms)
Money is worthless compared to time, and time can’t be possessed. Time slips away like sand through a sieve, and the more you shake it, the faster it goes. Switch. Stay still for 15 minutes. If you’re a classic over-achieving can’t-stand-still-won’t-stand-still entrepreneur type, it isn’t easy. See how suddenly time stretches to infinity. How your feet tap, and your skin crawls. You might feel the urge to cry. You brain will try to take over again. To command you to rational thought, to planning future actions. Searching desperately for some meaning to cling to.
Yeah whatever. Boo. Go back to work. Book a holiday. Take on a challenge. Decorate that room. Build a house. Start a Startup. You love it.
Before you do though, you could grab a bit of paper and scratch down your Nonifesto. Three, five or ten things you won’t do. Be as perverse as you like – it’s not supposed to be a pious list of New Year’s Resolutions, rather write down things you should do, but now decide not to, just for the hell of it, just to see what might happen. Just to open up a bit of space in your life (they say it’s the cracks that let the light in). It won’t instantly reveal the Meaning Of (Your) Life, but it might feel quite liberating.
